Chapter 24 - Hanging on to Max

Did you like the ending of the story? Why or why not? Do you think Sam made the wrong decision? How do you think Max will be like many years later? If you were to write an alternate ending for this book, what will you write instead?

  1. This chapter was about..

I could not get the story lines..because it was not mentioned that more than eighteen years passed after Sam gave up Max. But, i got ideas when Sam said that he saw grown up Max coming toward him. I felt sad because Sam really did let go Max away...but I also felt pleased when those two finally met up.

Althought this story did not end up with my expectation, I loved HANGING ON TO MAX. It gave me some ideas of teenagers' life, common thoughts and minds which are happening to me and around me.

  2. Bomi,
I couldn't believe it as well but you are not alone. Books are there to take you on a journey and that is where Hanging on to Max did. Sometimes, the road that the characters take is not something that you'll agree but it ends where it should be. It is our decision to take what lessons you want to get out of that journey. I'm glad you liked the book. Great job finishing it.

  3. I don’t like this ending of the story, it had some sad, the result I like isn’t this. I can’t negate the decision of Sam, because, teenage of life, it is too easy and hard; if have no troubles or some reason, I think, whoever, especially parents, whoever can abandon and support his child, even Sam. If I were to write an alternate ending for this book, I will change when Max said “Hi, I’m Max.” to “I’m Max, son of Sam.” I will make it into the fine result. When I finish this book, I proud of myself, because, first time, I attentively to finish reading a book, because of Hanging on to Max, I understand the teenage is a most important stage in our life, it also is a experience.

  4. Finally the last chapter of Hanging on to Max, I couldn’t understand this chapter but I know that the chapter was about after a decades. Max was eighteen years old already, who looked like a football player and I think Max heard about his father and visit him. When Sam met grown up Max he will definitely proud of him, because without real parents who grew up as a real man.
From this book I learn that how painful it is to raising a child in teenage life and responsibilities that I had to face. I enjoyed reading Hanging on to Max, it was interesting because the story was for us teaching us a lessons.

  7. I would say that I did like the ending of the story. It made us; the readers crave for more to read. In my opinion, I don’t think that Sam made the wrong decision. I think that he made the right one. Although it was hard for him to give Max up, I think that he made the right choice. For many years later, I think that Max will be keeping in touch with Sam, and hopefully everything for the both of them will turn out great. But if I were to write an alternate ending to this book, I think I’ll write the same. This book made me understand more about teenage life and that no matter how hard life gets, you just have to keep your head up high and move on.

  8. I don’t like how the story ended!! I was so mad when I read the part about Max coming over to see Sam; this wasn’t how I expected the story to end….I wanted Sam to be strong for Max, but instead he proved everyone right, he can’t be a father and I wanted Sam and Claire to end up together, but it didn’t happen. This book is upsetting. I think Max would turn out different from Sam, I mean he wouldn’t want to repeat his father’s footsteps knowing what’s going to happen, I hope Max doesn’t feel like he wasn’t loved by his parents. Brittany gave up Max and so did Sam, if I was Max I bet I’ll have a lot of hatred and anger towards my biological parents for giving me up for adoption. In my opinion, Sam made the wrong decision, I didn’t think he was going to give up Max… This book is really interesting and I enjoyed it!

If I were to write an alternate ending… I’ll write about the hardships the Sam and Max had to endure. For example; I’ll write how Sam couldn’t afford to buy Max what he wanted on his first birthday or throw him a big party, because he didn’t have the money, you know sad stories like that. In the end, I wouldn’t write about Max being adopted. I’ll write how Sam got a good job and he and Max lived a good life. My ending would sound cliché, but I wouldn’t want to upset my readers.

  9. Sarah, who the hell is Sarah, Abby, and Meg? I can’t believe though that Sam gave up Max just to end up with 2 other kids. He could’ve raised Sam! I’m upset to find this, and also that he hasn’t got in contact with Max. It’s hard to understand two different things when one signify so good and the other is a good reason too. He loved Max so why’d he give him away; he loved Max so much I guess he wanted what was best. Even though this wasn’t what was I expected I understand and see the difficulties some teens are faced with when having a baby.
Although I dislike Sam giving up Max, in my readings, I wouldn’t change one bit, it took me on a path of similarities with Sam and showed me how things could change in a moments notice.

  10. I like the ending because Max came to Sam. So, I think this book is happy ending. And surely Sam had very big mistake. But book is good ending. Max is very kind because he do not find his father. Bit he finds and met. So, Max has a big courage. If write the more story. I don’t write the story it is good ending and good finish. “Hi,” he says. He holds his hand. “I’m Max.” I want more this part conversation and nothing.

  11. The ending was disappointing. I was not expecting something like that. And no, I do not think that Sam made the wrong decision. It was for the best. It must have been really hard to decide, but he had to do what was best. He did not want to lack Max’s Necessities and wants. Probably Max will still have a little of the looks. In the end it said he still had Brittany’s big brown eyes. Hehe. If I were to write an alternative ending for this book, it would have been something like.. Him ending up with Claire, having other kids and raising them all as a big happy family. That would have been the perfect ending. It just fits the whole reason. The way they ended it was like, they were giving all the juicy parts, and then they suck it out of you! It is a total disappointment.

  12. No I did not like the ending, because on Chapter 23 Max was still a baby and now at the end of the story Max is already 18, wow I wish I grow up that fast. Yes I do think that Sam made the wrong decision, because he is a good father but he let the smallest thing get in the way. Babies have accidents because all they ever want to do is touch things. If I was to write the ending I would start off with Sam didn’t put max up for adoption and how their lives were together.

  13. I did like the ending of the story. I was touched that Max did not get mad at Sam for leaving him. I didn’t know that Sam would really do that, give Max up, I thought he was just thinking about it then he would changed his mind or something. Sam said he wouldn’t have any children after Max but I’m glad he changed his mind. I don’t think Sam made the wrong decision because Max turned out ok, Max doesn’t hate Sam for doing what he did. I wouldn’t change the ending if I had to. The author of this book did a great job writing the ending.

  14. I didn't really like the end of this chapter. I was so disappointed at Sam. How could he have given up! I thought that he was so strong and he can do everything that it takes to make it all work out. But then I understand why he had to do it. I wonder how Max will be like in the future. I think that Max will be longing to meet his own birth father and eager to get to know him. Sam, on the other side, would also be wondering what Max is doing and everything. If I were to make the ending, I would really want Sam to hold on to Max and try his best in college and help Max out in the future.

  15. "Hanging Onto Max" is more than just a mediocre novel with a rarely-done perspective- its main character is just as memorable as the content. I literally checked this book out from the library, read the first page, and raced through the novel until I finished it.

  16. Without a doubt, "Hanging Onto Max" succeeds at exploring one of the toughest issues. Not only is it from an intriguing male perspective, it deals with the issue of teen pregnancy with realism, empathy, and a fearlessness when it comes to exploring the gut-wrenching choices that those involved must make.

  17. Since the book's core themes relate to daily life, not just teen parenting, the book is really for anyone who's ever struggled (or is currently struggling) with a sense of a lost identity. It made me think about who I am as a person, and how I came to be the way I am.

  19. I was also shocked by the ending. It wasn't clear to me that Sam gave Max up for adoption until it mention that he pulled up in a used red Volvo and introduced himself. I was confused at the last chapter. Questions like who was Sarah or Abby popped in my head. Maybe the author did this to get the reader thinking. It's possible that if she was very explicit in the ending, it wouldn't be shocking to us.
I really want to know what happened to Claire, Andy, and Jenny though!
