  4. Chapter 13
I think it's very touching that Amy gets a beautiful gift from her safta. I also think that Amy is the only one in the whole family that gets a trinket like that! Maybe that will soften Amy's hard heart. It's also good that she is not alone, but when O'snat told her they will kill the lamb soon, it just made me realize even more that Amy has a soft side in that shell! It's amazing how the littlest things can get out the hardest in most people.

My thoughts and opinion about this chapter is that it’s so caring for Amy to get a gift even though she wasn't expecting one at all. As for me I would accept what is given to me especially if it's from someone I never knew. In addition she has many things to say about it like being Jewish isn't a part of her and how she says that her mother doesn't believe in religions, that she hasn't been to church in a long time only when her cousin was getting married. She should just accept what is given to her without having bad comments about it. I think that so far so good Amy, her father, O'snat and other family members are getting along.

  6. Chapter 13
It’s so sweet of Safta to give Amy a gift that she really treasures. It shows that Safta really loves Amy and cares about her. She also had this Jewish talk with Amy. I like the way she talks to Amy because it’s so comforting and encouraging. I felt the motivation about being Jewish is within the heart and that Amy is not actually a Jewish but it's within her. I feel that Safta is trying to make Amy open up with her feelings and everything. I believe that Amy will change for better when she leaves. I can tell that Amy is revealing herself to Safta. I am happy for her. When Amy felt pity for that little sheep, it touched me too. I also didn’t want the sheep to be killed and anything. I hate it when they slaughter three months old sheep. It just breaks my heart.

  8. I think Amy is really attached to her grandmother, even though she still thinks that she’s not a Jew. Amy finally realized that she doesn’t have to be a Jew in order to have that star necklace her grandmother had just gave her. I noticed that she’s decided to start spending time with her father while she’s here for the heck of it. I also think it’s kind of sweet when her grandmother gave that speech on the Jewish thing or star necklace. Amy is finally changing, the way I see it. How she doesn’t like animals... I see she has a heart though when she looked at that baby sheep in the eyes. She probably hasn’t felt that way in to any animal she’s come against. More like she never has…

  9. As Amy is eating breakfast, Safta hands her the Star of David necklace. Safta really seems to love Amy as her grand daughter. Amy really wants the necklace, but she feels sorry because she's not Jewish or have any religion. I think Safta is a person that can read the mind of a person. She is a warm-hearted grandmother. This is the reason why Amy was able to like her. The words she says to Amy is helping her to change her attitude. It's like Safta is teaching a life lesson to Amy. She always feels something touching her heart while she's taling to Safta. Now it's time for her to realize how much Ron loves her and wants to protect her.

  10. Now finally, Amy is taking her part of shaving sheep wool. I bet she would have never moved from her spot if Safta didn't give her encouragement to join the family activity. I'm so glad that Amy decided to be a part of them and tried to get used to Israel, despite her irritation and boredom toward it all. I guess the grandmother is the only person that's Amy's true best friend who's doing the best job keeping Amy comfortable; Safta even gave her the Star of David necklace to cheer her up. I think a time of three weeks is long enough for someone to try to get used to new things, not necessarily completely adapted. Amy is going to be perfecty fine in Israel, and she's going to stay great doing her trip.

  11. ps. I also liked how Safta discussed about being a Jew by heart more than mind, because that's the whole point about religion. I learn many things from this grandmother character in the book.

I really admire how Amy and her safta bond. For me, I can’t really stay around my grandparents; I feel a total awkwardness when I try to conversate with them. They talk to me in Chamorro and I understand, but I can’t speak back, really I can’t and I’m ashamed of that because that’s suppose to be my first language. I think there are a lot of gross things in this book. They actually feed dogs the sheep placenta? But I guess it’s normal for them. They American way of living and the Israeli way of living are the opposite’s… I think Ron wants Amy to do chores and I’m guessing he’s going to make her shave the sheep’s, The Amy I know won’t even get close to sheep’s, If she actually does shave one. I’ll clap for her.
