  1. Interesting opening chapter. I am imagining myself in place of Sam being a teenage parent. I wonder if I will be able to handle school and being a parent at the same time.

  2. Chapter 1
Chapter one kind of introduced the normal day for Sam as a single teen parent. Sam is a teenage boy that goes to an alternative school. An alternative school is for teen parents. Instead of going to normal high schools, they go to the alternative school where other teen parents are. It is much more flexible for those teen parents who have not finished school. There is a daycare and the teachers & counselors seem much more helpful, concerned and more flexible than teachers at normal high schools. I really like the fact that there is a school like that, so that teen parents have options. It would fit best in Saipan, since there are many teen parents who have no choice but to either drop out or have someone else watch their kids. So Sam has a son named Max. Max is in the daycare everyday, while Sam goes to school. Sam is very lucky to have people watch his kids for free. People who are experienced and trusted.

  3. Chapter 1
Sam was a lazy but a little bad boy. When I read this chapter, this is him give to me first feeling. Because in the class him just sleep and not listen to teacher to teach, and when teacher want to give him some about math work for him, him contradict his teacher. Max is Sam baby son, is be dependent to him.

  4. Chapter1

I think he is working hard and he is very fatigue.
Because he have a bady. His name is Sam and Sam's baby is Max.
I think he likes baby because it says in the last page of chapter one.
So, I think it's hard to do both, care a baby and schooling

  5. I could not catch the flow of the story at first, but I realized that when Sam could not pay attention to Mrs.Garcia’s lecture, he might have been pretty tired in those days. After he talked about his classes about the teacher and stopped by the crawlers’ room, all my ambiguous assumptions were settled down because his hidden main character, Max, appeared as he said his name. I felt that because his mind was all about Max, he could keep his ears open on the lecture. He struggled and was confused. I wondered what problems he will face as I read further more.

  6. What I think about chapter one, I kind of see Sam as a lazy person because he sleeps in class which is bad, however Sam apologizes to his teacher and that’s very genteel of him. Sam attends an alternative school, this is a place where teen parents go to and it’s a daycare too. I think we should have something like that here in Saipan since a lot of teens are getting pregnant and maybe it’ll make their lives a little easier. I like towards the end of chapter one when Sam goes to pick up Max, it moves me how Max really loves his father even though he is so young.

  7. I never knew there were alternative schools for teen! It would really help those teens who have babies and take some anxiety off their shoulders. I’m impressed on Sam’s strength to raise this baby up. I think about him and how I complain that I’m tired of school every day, but at times he has to go to school, and at times watch Max. Imagine the stress Sam deals with, as if being a father wasn’t already enough!

  8. In my opinion, I think that this chapter was pretty normal. I think that the character in the book, Sam is a really smart student, but at the same time, he has an eleven month old son named, Max. I was a little bit shocked at the fact that the student Sam has a kid. I was shocked because I don’t usually see smart teenage boys like him, have kids at the age of seventeen while they are still in high school. I did not really think that this chapter was all that interesting. I also think that the son Max sounds very adorable and cute.

  9. By reading story of chapter 1, I realize that Sam was not a good student in school. Sleeping during Mrs. Garcia’s class and answering only three questions on his test shows that he is not concentrating in class and he’s not a hard working student. I wonder how he will get his diploma without any effort like that. Also taking care of his son Max will be another big mission for him. Studying and taking care of he’s own child will be frustrating. I think story will tell about how Sam’s life being a dad, but also being a high school student

  10. Ch. 1
It is about a teenage father that is very lazy to take classes seriously. All he does in his classes is sleep, sleep, sleep. He is teachers try to help him to improve in his class so he doesn’t have to move. Since he’s a person that always sleeps in class his classmates would laugh at him.

  11. Chapter 1
I think Sam is kind of lazy because he always sleeps in class. And he is too smart for his math class but he still takes it because he just wants to graduate without challenging himself. Sam is a smart student but he always stays up late and goes to school very tired. I think that Sam is not really trying his best to do his work an come to school on time and not tired. I think that Sam just want to get on with his life with his baby an graduate high school and don’t care about the future.

The first chapter I think this book is about is about a young boy that a father um his not attending school maybe his a drop out student and not working to buy what the baby food or what the baby things I’m wondering where is Sam getting the money to support the baby well that`s what I think this story is about so far the way I look at the front cover

  13. In chapter one of “Hanging on to Max”, a 17 year old boy, Sam, has fallen asleep in class again (just like how any other teenager would do if they had a boring class). Sam is smart but he doesn’t really care, all he cares about is getting out of that class. Sam takes an easy class so he could graduate on time. I think that there are a lot of teenagers much like Sam; teenagers that are struggling to graduate, teenagers that are so smart but they don’t really care that they are because they have something else in mind. I know a lot of teenagers that really wants to get out of school and they have no other way but drop-out. I also know teens that are struggling in their classes but they stay in school anyway. Sam is actually a great role model because he stayed in school despite the fact that he has a son to take care of and tons of homework to do.

  14. i think that sam is lazy and all he wants to do is sleep not learn, but in a way sam is kind of right who would trun off the lights at 1:30 in the afternoon and teach a boring subject, it'll just make the students tempted to sleep.i know that sam wants to graduate.i know sam is struggling, but that is just how life is and he just gots to accept it.sam may be like this now but know that he will graduate.

  16. This part of the chapter was pretty interesting to know that not only young teen mother could live without partner even teen guys could too. I never thought of that before. Sam such an inspiring person to all the teen fathers all around. You know if this was a true story I would love to marry a guy like him, doing anything for his baby. There are not a lot of guys like him out there. The other thing about this story is that it didn’t really mention about why he ended up alone or what happen to his girlfriend. But am guessing it will be later on in the chapter. Am starting too really like this book.

  17. i think being a single parent is really not that easy for any tipical teenager. just thinking about it if i were a single parent and went to school i think it'll be pretty hard and stressful for myself. i think he did the right thing on holding on to the baby and not giving him or her away to any orphane or someone else. This part of the chapter was pretty interesting to know that not only young teen mother could live without partner even teen guys could too. I never thought of that before. Sam such an inspiring person to all the teen fathers all around.

  19. Chapter 1
In the beginning of this chapter, I thought that this character, Sam, was a languid student. I thought that he doesn’t care about his grades or whether he’s sleeping in class. Moreover, I thought that he is not a really responsible kid. But, after reading further and going on to the mid of this chapter, I found out that he is not only a student but also a “father” and that’s why he’s going to this Alternative School thing. I was so stunned that he has a son. For that reason, I kind of understand why he’s like that in class, which is sleeping. I think that Sam will go through tough times as a parent and a student at the same time. On the other hand, I think that he can manage it all. I hope. But, I also think that he’s going to feel like giving up sometimes because it’s not easy taking care of a baby and doing all your assignments for school and, as well as, home chores. I just can’t wait to see what happens in the next chapter. Oh, and I wonder who’s the mother of his baby.
