Chapter 31 - Stand Tall
Sophie and Tree were talking about the tree including the other plants that surrounds it - bush, vines weeds. "They all mean nothing," according to Sophie. Do you think she is comparing them to Tree's life and the people that he comes in contact with? Who do you think they are or what events in his life was she referring to? Was Sophie right?

Chapter 31
ReplyDeleteI think she's comparing the large oak tree to Tree's life because Tree has helped many others and they know him because of that. He stands out of everything else because of who he is. I think the bushes, the vine, and the weeds are just obstacles to the oak tree like the bad people are in Tree's path. I think that what she meant by it. I think Sophie is right because she's Tree's friend and she knows how Tree goes because she has the same life as him too. I understand how they are going through even though it didn't happen to me but other than that, she was right.
It's Memorial Day. Tree is marching with grandpa and Sophie is playing the flute. I'm so proud of Tree and all the characters in the book. Everyone was able to make it through their war. Although, I was still expecting his parents to get back together. This march is very meaningful to everyone and it shows how hard these people fought. I think Sophie is comparing Tree's life and the people around him with the tree. I would say that the bush, vines, and weeds are all the conflicts Tree had to go through in the book. I think Sophie is right when she said 'It all means nothing.' I think she means that all the hard times Tree and she had will feel like nothing later on. These events will be remembered in their heads, but their hearts won't be hurt by it anymore. It's noting but the past.
ReplyDeleteI think this chapter is cool because they got to be in the parade and joined the walk of the vets as in the veterans in the march for the rights for the woman to vote I think that this chapter is cool because they got to hear the bag pipes and the other instruments that were being played in the march. I think that the veterans should be thanking for fighting for freedom and peace and they should be honored for that. I think Sophie is right when she said 'It all means nothing.' I think she means that all the hard times Tree and she had will feel like nothing later on.

ReplyDeleteI think that somehow she is comparing it to Tree’s life and the people that he makes contact with. All the bush and vines weeds they don’t matter because they’re not a part of the tree. Therefore, Tree’s problems are just around him but they will never become a part in his life. The bush or vines can always be removed. Similarly Tree’s problems will slowly drift away and be gone. I think that the bushes and vines are referring to the things that have been a great pressure to him. I think it’s everything that made him miserable like the events that have been a memorable to him. In addition I think that Sophie is right about it.
I think Sophie is comparing all the bad memories to the bush and vine weeds. And I think she's right. all the sadnesses and bad memories would be nothing as the time goes by. Even though it hurt right now, later on it will be nothing. It's just a past, won't hurt you anymore
ReplyDeleteAlmond & Cherry Jubilee Jam – I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one. I like Cherries, I like Almonds, and I suppose I’d enjoy a good jubilee if I encountered one. Not being sure I’d recognize one in real life, I was fortunate to have one shipped to me in an 6 ounce jar! Cherry Almond Jubilee is a very tasty combination of sweet and sour cherries (not Asian food here, imagine tart, succulent cherries, slightly candied, surrounded by sliced almonds and a tasty sauce that is both sweet and tangy-ly tart. One sample and your taste buds will inform your brain why this is called a jubilee! I’m not sure how I’d use this, perhaps as a topping on a baked good, or even potentially with a simply prepared chicken breast or salad of bitter greens (in small quantity). But I can tell you one thing, a spoonful of this will excite your taste buds for a long time after the spoonful is gone!

With the defeat of France in Europe in 1940, the French Third Republic was replaced by the Vichy Regime, to which the colony remained loyal. Heavily dependent on Nazi Germany, Vichy France was forced to surrender control of French Indochina to Germany's ally, Japan. The natural resources of Vietnam were exploited for the purposes of the Japanese Empire's military campaigns into the British Indochinese colonies of Burma, the Malay Peninsula and India. The Japanese occupation was a key cause of the Vietnamese Famine of 1945, which caused around two million deaths, equivalent to as much as 10% of the contemporary population.[

The partition of Vietnam, with Ho Chi Minh's Democratic Republic of Vietnam in North Vietnam, and Emperor Bảo Đại's State of Vietnam in South Vietnam, was not intended to be permanent by the Geneva Accords, and the Accords expressly forbade the interference of third powers. However, in 1955, the State of Vietnam's Prime Minister, Ngo Dinh Diem, toppled Bảo Đại in a fraudulent referendum organised by his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu, and proclaimed himself president of the Republic of Vietnam. The Accords mandated nationwide elections by 1956, which Diem refused to hold, despite repeated calls from the North for talks to discuss elections.

In a small pot, rehydrate the dried mushrooms in some warm water for a few minutes, until they are tender and fairly moist. Be sure to save that water for use the risotto! Dice the re-hydrated mushrooms and in a separate pot, add the quinoa over medium/low heat. You’ll need to play with your stove’s heat to really get it right for you, our gas stove looked to be on about 15% or slightly less. Add a splash of wine and let everything cook down a bit, followed by some of the water from the Mushrooms. Let this cook down a bit, then add about 1 cup of vegetable stock. Continue stirring and mixing, and whenever the mixture gets a little low on moisture, add more vegetable stock. If you end up using your 2 cups of stock and the quinoa is not quite ready, just add water for your liquid. Be sure to cook until the quinoa is done, you’ll notice a snail-like spiral shape in the quinoa, and the entire mixture will be much thicker than when you started. This is because quinoa is a very high protein seed, and as it cooks it releases it’s proteins out into the dish you’re cooking it with. These proteins float around, bumping into each other, clumping, trapping water, and eventually, making a thick, hearty mixture. This cook time will take about 20 minutes or so. Be sure to season to your taste as well.

In the plains, the winter extremes can be from 0 °F (-18 °C) to −10 °F (−23 °C). About 75% of the precipitation falls within the growing season, from April to September, but this area is very prone to droughts. Cambodia was ruled as a vassal between its neighbors, until it was colonized by the French in mid-19th century. Cambodia gained independence in 1953. The Vietnam War extended into Cambodia, giving rise to the Khmer Rouge, which took Phnom Penh in 1975. Cambodia reemerged several years later within a socialistic sphere of influence as the People's Republic of Kampuchea until 1993. After years of isolation, the war-ravaged nation was reunited under the monarchy in 1993.

Excavations in its lower layers produced a series of radiocarbon dates as of 6000 BC.[9][10]
ReplyDeleteUpper layers in the same site gave evidence of transition to Neolithic, containing the earliest dated earthenware ceramics in Cambodia[11]
Archeological records for the period between Holocene and Iron Age remain equally limited. Other prehistoric sites of somewhat uncertain date are Samrong Sen (not far from the ancient capital of Udong), where the first investigations began in 1877,[12] and Phum Snay, in the northern province of Banteay Meanchey.[13] Prehistoric artifacts are often found during mining activities in Ratanakiri.[9]

During the 3rd, 4th, and 5th centuries, the Indianised states of Funan and Chenla coalesced in present-day Cambodia and southwestern Vietnam. For more than 2,000 years, Cambodia absorbed influences from India, passing them on to other Southeast Asian civilizations that are now Thailand and Laos.[17] The Khmer Empire flourished in the area from the 9th to the 13th centuries.[18] Around the 13th century, Theravada Buddhism was introduced to the area through monks from Sri Lanka.[19] From then on, Theravada Buddhism grew and eventually became the popular religion.

The disease is believed to occur when there is susceptibility, or a lack of immune system resistance, to DPB-causing bacteria or viruses, caused by several genes that are found predominantly in individuals of East Asian descent. The highest incidence occurs among the Japanese, followed by Koreans. DPB occurs more often in males, and usually begins around age 40. It was recognized as a distinct new disease in the early 1960s, and was formally named diffuse panbronchiolitis in 1969.
