Chapter 2- City of Ember
Based on what you have read so far, describe the setting of the story. Was it set in the modern time? Where did the events in the story takes place? Describe setting of the story?
The setting of this story for me, Takes place in a small town and I don’t think this was modern time. Since were so advance with technology now days we wouldn’t need a messenger to send messages because we have cell phones and computers for ways to communicate. The story takes place in a small town where you’ll hardly find skyscrapers and big supermarkets. I think they only had one place that sold food and other necessities. They would preserve their light bulbs and depend on day time light. The City of Ember was really dark and at night you couldn’t see anything. Everyone knew each other and teens my age were busy working and were out of school. I think everything in this town was old and you hardly see anything modern.
From what I have read, based on the information that was given, the City of Ember probably was an isolated, middle-aged place that has the same repitition year by year. To back up my statement, I will use Linas job for example. Messengers in her time are people who deliver messages from one person to another by foot. Now, we have telephones, cellphones, pagers, computers etc. The city of ember was pitch black at night, the lights though were constantly blinking. Light during the day was probably their only steady source of light. And also, I mentioned repitition because straight out of school they were already given jobs. It repeated everytime a class graduates. I wouldnt use that word though. But yeah, this was probably an old time kinda place.
Chapter 2 “a message to the mayor “ I think this chapter is going to be base on a message to the mayor saying that they want to change the job they to job they wanted to work well that’s what I think the chapter is about
I like when she came to Hafter street because it seem scary and the street was deep in shadow and the event that happened over to Hafter street was four of it’s streetlamps were out and had not been fixed. For a second, Lina thought of the rumor she’d heard about light bulbs: that some kinds were completely gone. And somewhere inside her, there was worm! Yuck! I choose this because it is scary and creepy. That is why I choose this part of chapter 2. If I were her I will be scary because of the no light and a WORM!
The setting sounds like its underground almost, like being in a snow globe but all dark around, or a locker. Anywhere dark sounds perfectly exactly like Ember. It seemed to be modern because they had lights, generators, but sounds scarce in materials in that place: because they had to use “messengers” instead of phones. I imagine it to be underground because it’s only place, which has no sunlight touching it. Most of the events are just on the City of Ember and nowhere else. The setting of City of Ember is like a city in the middle of nowhere, underground, and it’s the only source of light.
Chapter 2 A message to the mayor A girl who name Lina, always as the story talk about that, it is a pretty girl. In this chapter is about Lina start to make her job, and went to sent message, you can think in that time and city, they don’t have anything can send message, not like now, we have the cell phone or computer any ways to send message. They want to depend on the labor power. But, I don’t know how Lina wants to make this job and so love it. Always, I admire of her so much, because especially a girl. If change by now, I think nobody can do it or like to do, because that is about run to anywhere and sent message. Also, in this chapter, when she sent a message to mayor, she get some trouble, but, that is right, because still solve.
Ch. 2 A (Message to the Mayor) In this chapter I think that it is good that Lina had found a job. Her job is a messenger. I don’t think that her job is that fun but I guess you could meet more people this way. It’s nice that Lina has this kind of job because she knows and memorizes all the streets in the city of Ember. It’s also nice how Lina really loves her baby sister. But what’s sad to know is that Lina has lost her mother already. The only two people that she has now is her grandmother and her baby sister. It’s also sad how she misses her parents.
Chapter 2 was really long. I’m glad that girl Lina got the job she wanted. But why is being a “messenger” so exciting and fun??? I thought that it was really nice of Doon to trade jobs with Lina. I did not expect him to do that at all. Maybe he has ideas on how to fix the generator and make things less hard for the city of ember. It really shows that Lina likes her job because she has so much fun running from here to there all the time. I thought that Lina was going to get in trouble after she went to the rooftop, but I guess they just decided to let her go because she was new. I wonder what Doon wanted to talk to Lina about…
It Seems like Lina is match to be a messenger. She knows the route well and she is close to most of the people. Wow.. after they got their job, they starts right away. On the first day of messenger, Lina seems like she is doing very well and she was very busy delivering a message to her customers. And Doon’s first day of work didn’t seem okay, tired and chilly. Well.. even I wouldn’t like pipe work, sounds it is smelly and dirty which no one likes it. But he prefer to be a pipe worker instead of being a messenger, I think Doon wants to be a person who is helpful to the city.
This chapter was about her family and her first day of being a messenger. I felt bit empathy when I found out that she does not have parent but a younger sister whom Lina has responsibility to take care of. And I felt relief because now Lina got a job that she has been longing for and this jib can support her only family. After she heard of her new job, I saw Lina was extremely excited about her job. She was desperate about traveling through the villages to tell the messages. Most of the time, she showed excitement whenever she sent the messages. But once she went to the three-story-building and walked inside although she was not allowed, I was pretty worried about what will come next. However, when I learned it was her first, seeing the while city of Ember in on view, I thought Lina took a worthy risk. This chapter showed Lina’s full of passion about her job and I really loved the part when she started to see not only just a city of Ember but also imagine the life beyond the city.
